We were approached to produce a 632-page coffee table history book of Aston Martin cars that Aston Workshops have restored over 30 years. The book has to lay flat in order to showcase the stunning photography at its best quality.
At 632 pages this book is one of the thickest we have produced and at the size of 335 x 291mm it is also the biggest. It proved to be very heavy and on the edge of machine binding capabilities. With the weight involved (nearly 5 kilos) the binding had to be strong and long lasting and with over 400 images we had to make sure the colour balancing was perfect.
A set of dummies was produced using various paper weights in order to test the best stock to display the outstanding images. Proofs of all of the images were produced to make sure they looked their best and with some images covering a double page spread, the final size of these were nearly A2.
In-house case binding facilities helped with testing, making of dummies and then the final binding, thread sewing and final casing which was most important due to the weight of the books.
